Verona is about to become a lot more colourful. The Verona Community Association has announced the first ever "Adopt a Barrel" flower growing competition for Verona. Use your green thumb and your imagination to help beautify Verona this summer. The flower barrels lining Main St are being put up for adoption. Many businesses have already adopted the barrels in front of their stores and will be putting their gardening skills to the test. The remainder of the barrels are now being offered for adoption to the rest of Verona in the "Adopt a Barrel" competition. Contestants will lovingly care for the flowers they plant in their barrel. They will water, fertilize and pull the weeds. Sometime in August an independent jury will judge all entries on the basis of originality, use of plants, colour, etc. The winners will be announced at the Garlic Festival in September. Oh did I forget to mention the prizes? $ 300 for first prize, $200 for second prize, $100 for third prize. Submit your entries for the competition by May 7. If there are more entries than barrels available, a draw will be held to assign the barrels. Entry forms may be picked up at Local Family Farms, Jitterbugs, Nicole's Gifts, Main St Mercantile and Tea Room and Verona Hardware. Join in the fun, help create a "Garden of Blooms" on Main St.

The Verona community was deeply saddened last Saturday, April 10th when Charles Stewart passed away. We extend our heart-felt condolences to Barbara and the children Tom and Linda and their families. Charlie will be greatly missed. His involvement in the community was tremendous. For last year's festival Charlie designed and built the Verona Express Train, which provided rides for delighted children. From the annual running of Charlie's Soap Box Derby to his help in creating the Verona Kiosk, Charlie's presence will remain in everything that is good in Verona and his memory will remain in our hearts.
