How did it get so late so soon?
Its night before its afternoon.
December is here before its June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?
----- Dr Seuss

December is a month of contradictions. The darkest month of the year is, at the same time, the month associated with the most light and hope. It has always been my favourite holiday month, a time when all my extended family would meet for a few days of joyful revelry. However as the years have passed, sisters and brothers now celebrate with their own extended families and parents and elders are no longer with us. Now it is a smaller celebration and a little more wistful as we recall the Christmas past when our children were young and wide-eyed. This is the season to remember all our blessings and be grateful.

Verona Free Methodist Church is holding a novel Christmas event called 'A Walk to the First Christmas.' Journey back in time to the night Jesus was born. Enjoy eating with the wise men at a first century meal in Herod's throne room. This free event is a walking tour through the church with actors and scenes that take approximately 60 minutes (including the free meal). The tours begin at 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Saturday December 19th.

One last chance this year to stock up on goodies from the Verona Farmers' Market this December 19. The vendors will have lots of holiday foods, holiday treats and free draws for Market Moolah. Help out the Rural Visions Food Bank and bring a food or cash donation to the Market. Lion's Club Hall, Verona Sand Rd. 9 am to noon.

Here is a heads up for January. Trinity United Church will be serving their popular "Winter Weekend Wake-Up Breakfasts" starting January 9.

The Verona Lions Club will be hosting a blood donor clinic Thursday January 14th from 2:30 to 6:30 at the Verona Lions Hall. To register call 1-888-236-6283 or feel free to drop in and donate.

Verona Lions Club will be hosting a safe food-handling course on Saturday January 16. The KFL&A Public Health Service is offering the seven-hour Safe Food Service Training Seminar for food service personnel. Registration is $35.00 and includes lunch. There will be a 50-question, multiple-choice examination at the end of the day. Everyone who scores at least 70 percent on this test will be awarded a provincially recognized Food Service Certificate. To register call: 613-374-3807 or e-mail wayne.conway@sympatico.ca

As this year winds to a close, I am grateful for so many things and especially for my friends and neighbours in this wonderful community of Verona.

I echo these best wishes from the poet D.M. Dillinger to all our readers. "This is my wish for you: peace of mind, prosperity through the year, happiness that multiplies, health for you and yours, fun around every corner, energy to chase your dreams, joy to fill your holidays!"
