Head off to the Lion's Club Jamboree for three evenings of great fun and games. The Jamboree will be here July 8, 9, and 10th. There will be games of chance, great Bingo prizes, famous jamboree burgers and fries along with a fantastic midway. Canteen opens at 6:00 PM, other activities start at 6:30 pm. Verona Sand Road.
Verona Family Fishing Day is this Saturday, July 10th from 11am to 2pm at Verona [Rock] Lake. Prizes for all kids under 16 who catch a fish. Free BBQ with hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, juice and water. Bring your boat or fish from the dock. For this event, Canadian residents do not require a fishing license. Please pre-register with Cam McCauley at cam.mccauley@ontario.ca or call 613-531-5714 to reserve your spot! This is a free event.
Verona's second free "Music in the Park" summer concert will be held Sunday, July 11 at McMullen Beach. Catch the country music of Rick Smith and Free Beer! (Sorry, that's a band -- no beer!) 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and prepare for a great afternoon of entertainment. Refreshments available.
Another first for Verona. The first rehearsal of the Cattail Chorus is on Thursday, July 15 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Lion's Hall. Further rehearsals will be Thursday the 22nd, 29th and August 5, from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. This Cattail Chorus will perform on the main stage at the Verona Cattail Festival. This chorus is open to anyone who likes to sing, including kids 6 or older. The music will be easy and fun.
A Blood Donor Clinic will be held at the Verona Lions Hall, Verona Sand Rd, Thursday July 15th, 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Booking appointments in advance is greatly appreciated. 1-888-236-6283.
The Portland District Recreation Committee is doing a wonderful job refurbishing the McMullen Beach and Park. Some people are wondering what happened to the old playground equipment. For safety reasons, it had to be removed. The Rec. committee will be fundraising to replace the old playground structure with brand new equipment. Keep your eyes on this column for more details. The Ontario Volunteer awards ceremony was held June 28th in Kingston. Local residents were honoured for their volunteer work. Bob Rose, Troop Scouter for 1st Verona, and Chris Perry, Scout Counselor, were presented awards for 5 years of volunteering with Scouting. Harold Dalmas, Group Commissioner for South Frontenac Group (1st Verona, 1st Sydenham & 1st Perth Road) received a 25-year volunteer service award. Marni Pederson received the 40-year volunteer service award. Judy and Wayne Conway each received a 5 year volunteer service award. Kudos to all these recipients for their tremendous work.
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2010 of Prince Charles Public School. At the recent ceremony, guest speaker was Mike Smith, goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightnings. Mike grew up in Verona and attended PCPS. Many awards were awarded that night to very deserving students. Just to mention one, the Verona Lion Club Spirit Award was presented to Melanie Martin and Adam Brown for recognition of their dedication to the community and their volunteer service.
