The Portland District Recreation Committee is doing a wonderful job refurbishing the McMullen Beach and Park. Some people are wondering what happened to the old playground equipment. For safety reasons, it had to be removed. The Rec. committee will be fundraising to replace the old playground structure with brand new equipment. Keep your eyes on this column for more details. The Ontario Volunteer awards ceremony was held June 28th in Kingston. Local residents were honoured for their volunteer work. Bob Rose, Troop Scouter for 1st Verona, and Chris Perry, Scout Counselor, were presented awards for 5 years of volunteering with Scouting. Harold Dalmas, Group Commissioner for South Frontenac Group (1st Verona, 1st Sydenham & 1st Perth Road) received a 25-year volunteer service award. Marni Pederson received the 40-year volunteer service award. Judy and Wayne Conway each received a 5 year volunteer service award. Kudos to all these recipients for their tremendous work.

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2010 of Prince Charles Public School. At the recent ceremony, guest speaker was Mike Smith, goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightnings. Mike grew up in Verona and attended PCPS. Many awards were awarded that night to very deserving students. Just to mention one, the Verona Lion Club Spirit Award was presented to Melanie Martin and Adam Brown for recognition of their dedication to the community and their volunteer service.
