My sister, Carolyn is visiting from British Columbia for the next two weeks. She loves it here in Verona. She can't believe the abundance of events and activities that is happening in and around our village this summer. The hometown spirit is quite infectious.

The Portland District and Area Heritage Society presents its Annual Old-Fashioned Strawberry Social (homemade shortcake biscuits made from a heritage recipe, with real whipped cream and luscious strawberries) on Saturday, July 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lions Club Hall. $5 for adults, $2.50 for kids under 12; coffee, tea or cold drink included. Come to the Frontenac Farmers Market and stay for the shortcake!

Verona's first musical "Buzztown" will debut at the festival and the casting call is out. 7 people for speaking parts and a chorus of adults and children are required. Ability to read music is not required. Auditions will be held Saturday June 25 from 10 am to 12 noon at the Verona Lions Hall, Verona Sand Road. Come out and be part of a fabulous new musical about Verona by David Archibald. For more information contact Jennifer at 374-2199 or John at 374-2516.

A public meeting for the Verona Community Improvement Plan will be held on July 5th. This meeting will be in the Council chambers in Sydenham as part of the Council meeting. The reason for this Public meeting is to consider a proposal for the Community Improvement Plans for the village of Verona. The purpose and effect of the Plan is to establish a framework for financial incentive programs to help revitalize the village of Verona and improve the appearance of the main street. A free Ontario Early Years School Readiness Program is open to all residents of South Frontenac whose children will be starting kindergarten in September. Participants will enjoy an afternoon of activities designed to assist children in preparing for the transition into kindergarten. Topics that will be covered - getting ready to start school, school bus safety, self help skills development, gross motor and fine motor activities and much more. This is a play based learning group. This program will run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at St. Paul's Church at 4436 Mill St in Sydenham. Participants are dropped off from 1 to 3 pm. Contact Melissa Elliott at 613-376-6477 to register for the Tuesday or Thursday afternoon session or to ask questions. The course runs for six weeks starting Tuesday July 5.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Bedford, is holding their Summer Annual Fund Raising Dinner at the Church Hall on Saturday July 9. Mike Mundell's Fish Fry will be catering. Dinner is from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Adults: $15.00; Children 6 to 11 yrs. old: $5.00; Children 5 yrs and under: Free. Come enjoy this great meal, and bring your family and friends.
