Harrowsmith celebrates Canada Day with a July 1 parade and a day of festivities in Centennial Park. If you have never been, this is the year to make it a tradition. The Verona Cattail Festival volunteers and our beloved mascot Cameron will be participating in the parade. Look for the colourful Verona Cattail Express to be tooting along in the parade as well. Then stay to enjoy the many events that will be in the park, topped off with a spectacular display of fireworks in the evening. Can't think of a better way to spend Canada Day!

Then on Saturday July 2, head down to the Frontenac Farmers Market at the Verona Lion's Centre. Strawberry season is upon us and the many vendors will have their strawberry wares. Afterwards you can sit down and enjoy the Annual Old-Fashioned Strawberry Social (homemade shortcake biscuits made from a heritage recipe, with real whipped cream and luscious strawberries). This is sponsored by The Portland District and Area Heritage Society, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lions Club Hall. $5 for adults, $2.50 for kids under 12; coffee, tea or cold drink included. Visit the Frontenac Farmers Market and stay for the shortcake! Verona Sand Road.

Volunteers are the backbone of our village of Verona. They are the special people who selflessly give of their time and efforts to make our community such a great place. Six Verona residents were recipients of the 2011 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards. 15-year service awards were handed out at a special ceremony in Kingston on Tuesday, June 28. Kudos to these dedicated volunteers who have made Verona into the fantastic village that it is - Doug Lovegrove, Doug Boulter, Linda Boulter, Joyce Casement, Louise Day and John McDougall.

The Verona Family Fishing Day will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 11am to 2pm at Verona [Rock] Lake. Prizes for all kids under 16 who catch a fish. Free BBQ with hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, juice and water. Bring your boat or fish from the dock. For this event, Canadian residents do not require a fishing license. Please pre-register with Linda Bates at 613-374-1307 to reserve your spot! This is a free event brought to you by Frontenac Stewartship Council and the Verona Community Association. I have heard from a lot of residents who attended last year and they had a blast. Join them for another fun Family Fishing Day!

Fish during the day, then head to Verona Sand Road for the Lion's Club Jamboree for three evenings of great fun and games. The Jamboree will be here Friday to Sunday, July 8, 9 and 10. There will be games of chance, great Bingo prizes, famous jamboree burgers and fries along with a fantastic midway. Canteen opens at 6:00 PM, other activities start at 6:30 pm.

Verona's second free "Music in the Park" summer concert will be held Sunday, July 10 at McMullen Beach. Come and enjoy the music from the 60's to current of The Camp Fire Boys. 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and prepare for a great afternoon of entertainment. Refreshments available.
